A Day with Mr. Khano: A Shepherd’s Story of Mountain Life

“My sheep gave me more than a livelihood—they gave me a life without stress.”

That is how Mr. Khano described what his sheep meant to him.

For a moment, all of us were jealous.

Not because we knew everything about his life. We didn’t. But because of the way he spoke about it: his sheep had given him something beyond an income.

They had given him a life he valued.

A different rhythm

Some of us were ready to trade our lifestyles for his—at least for a week.

In the end, we joined him for a day.

One day could not tell us everything about being a shepherd. But it gave us a chance to step away from our own routines and spend time with someone whose relationship with work sounded very different from ours.

His words stayed with us.

More than a livelihood. A life without stress.

More than a view of the mountains

For The Natives Travel, meeting Mr. Khano was a reminder that a place is more than its scenery.

It is also the people who live there, the work they do, and what that work means to them.

We came away with more than a photograph of a shepherd. We came away thinking about our own lives—and what we might learn by spending a little time in his.

Sometimes, travelling through people begins with listening.
