Juniper and the Fragrance of Welcome in the Mountains

A welcome can begin before a word is spoken.

In the tradition we share, it begins with the fragrance of juniper—a scent associated with reverence, affection, and the arrival of someone important.

A fragrance with a sacred history

Juniper holds a sacred place in some mountain traditions. Historical accounts of Hunza describe shamans, known as bitan, using juniper smoke in rituals associated with the pari—mountain spirits often translated as fairies. Within these beliefs, the fragrance carried a meaning beyond its scent.

It was connected to a world approached with reverence.

Welcoming those we cherish

In the welcome we describe, juniper’s fragrance is offered to guests and loved ones as a gesture of honour.

The meaning is simple: your arrival matters.

The connection between sacred fragrance and hospitality gives this gesture its warmth. Something held in reverence becomes part of welcoming another person.

Keeping the tradition alive

At The Natives Travel, we want our welcome to carry more than a greeting.

We want it to carry a story—of the place, its people, and the traditions they choose to share.

Whenever we welcome you with juniper, we keep that gesture alive.

A fragrance. A welcome. A tradition carried forward.
